I’m back in the beautiful, foodie-heaven city of Montreal, where I first honed my taste buds on poutine and the best Matzo ball soup two Jewish grandmothers could ever make (though yes, I’ve also burnt my taste buds on the latter.)
However, the 514’s restaurant landscape has changed and grown since I was a youngin’, so I’ve enlisted some of my hip, trendy Montreal friends to re-show me the ropes. Since I’m renting an office space in the Mile End — which is, in it’s own east coast Canadian way, very much like my old L.A. hood of Silver Lake/Echo Park — I’m right by some of Montreal’s best food joints, including this painfully stylish, perfectly broken-in vegan-vegetarian cafe Le Cagibi, where I met my friend Ryan for lunch last week.
I was craving something hearty, so I went with their barbecue tofu wrap, served grilled in a tortilla with spinach, pickles, and awesome vegan mayo (who says you need eggs? well, I usually do, but i make the occasional exception.) We also sampled their iced drink selection: the blackberry lemonade is PERFECT for this humidity.
My sources tell me their breakfast is even better…an incentive to head to work early, perhaps?
